Can I get first aid certified online in Ontario?

For Ontario workplace first aid, an online-only course is not a WSIB-approved way to meet the first aid training requirement. The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) says approved blended programs pair online theory with instructor-led classroom skills. It currently approves no online-only first aid programs that meet its criteria. That is an Ontario workplace rule, not a statement about every online class in Canada. WSIB First Aid Program.

A learner studies on a laptop, then attends classroom skills training with an instructor and practice manikin.

Online, blended and classroom are not the same

A video or self-paced lesson can help you learn words and ideas. But watching someone practise is not the same as showing a skill yourself. A blended program has an online part and an in-person skills part with an instructor. A classroom program does its teaching and skills work in person. Before paying, ask exactly what you must complete and what certificate is issued.

The word approved matters. A course being called “blended” does not itself make it acceptable. The employer should check the provider's current WSIB status, the course level and the worker's role. A course certificate also has to match the requirement of the specific job or regulator. Do not treat a quick completion badge as proof of workplace acceptance.

What course name should you look for?

Ontario uses basic and intermediate workplace first aid levels. You may also see the historical terms Emergency First Aid and Standard First Aid on older pages or certificates. Canadian Red Cross's 2026 course names are Basic/Emergency First Aid and Intermediate/Standard First Aid, with the appropriate CPR level attached. The names can coexist during transition, but the old and new words should not hide which course you actually need.

A CPR-only course is not automatically the workplace first aid course. The WSIB distinguishes CPR training from first aid training, even when CPR is part of an approved first aid program. Ask your workplace whether it requires basic or intermediate first aid and which CPR level. For a closer look at provider recognition, see ActionBafoly's existing Red Cross/WSIB comparison rather than assuming every Red Cross-labelled course meets your particular employer's need.

Does the online part finish the course?

No. In an approved blended course for an Ontario workplace, you must finish the classroom skills part too. Ask the provider how to access the online part, when it must be completed, and where the instructor-led session takes place. If you have a deadline at work, leave time for both parts and certificate issuance. Do not confuse a booking confirmation or an online-module completion notice with a final first aid certificate.

For a learner outside Ontario, do not borrow the WSIB rule without checking the local authority. Quebec's CNESST pathway is separate. ActionBafoly does not offer CNESST courses. An online awareness resource can still be useful learning, but its value as education is a different question from whether it satisfies a workplace requirement.

Ask before you book

Ask three things: “Who issues the certificate?”, “Where and how do I demonstrate skills?”, and “Has my employer confirmed this exact course is accepted?” Keep the answer in writing if your workplace manages training records. If a sales page says “100% online” and also promises Ontario workplace first aid acceptance, check against the WSIB's current program page rather than relying on the ad.
