My first aid certificate expired. What should I do next?
If your certificate is already expired, do not assume a short recertification course will renew it. The Canadian Red Cross says its recertification course is only for a person whose certificate is still valid. Ask a training provider which full course matches your goal. If the date has not passed yet, ask promptly whether your course and region have an eligible recertification option. Canadian Red Cross: Recertify Your Training.

First, check what you hold
Look at the course name, the organization that issued the certificate and the expiry date. A CPR Level C certificate is not the same thing as a first aid course that includes CPR. An employer or licensing body may ask for a specific course. If you are unsure, ask them before you pay for another class.
Most Canadian Red Cross training certificates last three years; Basic Life Support (BLS) is an exception at one year, according to its help page. That general guide does not tell you whether your certificate is accepted for a particular job. Nor does it turn a past-due certificate into a valid one. ActionBafoly does not offer BLS/SVR or CNESST courses; ask for guidance or a referral if that is what you need.
Choose the next step by date
| Certificate status | What to check | Sensible next step |
|---|---|---|
| Still valid, close to expiry | Course, issuer, region and available recertification format | Ask the provider about eligibility and timing before it expires. |
| Already expired | Exact course required for work or study | Ask about the appropriate full course; do not assume a recertification seat. |
| Date or record unclear | Issuer's record and employer requirements | Confirm the record privately with the issuer, then choose training. |
Renewal options depend on the course and province. Send the provider your course name, issuer and expiry date. Ask whether you need a full course or qualify for renewal. If your certificate has already expired, the Red Cross renewal rule does not apply to you.
What if you need proof for work today?
Tell your supervisor that the date has passed, if it has. Ask what training and interim coverage your workplace requires. Do not present an expired certificate as current. This article cannot decide a workplace's compliance duties or replace a direct check with the employer and the relevant authority.
The original issuer may offer a way to find your certificate or check its validity. Use its official account or verification route rather than sending a certificate image into a public comment or open chat. A training provider usually needs the course name, issuer and expiry date to discuss options, not your private document on a public page.
Can you take the same class again?
A full class may be the right path when recertification is not available. Confirm the course's exact name, CPR level, format, location and acceptance first. Red Cross course names changed under the 2026 standards: Basic/Emergency First Aid and Intermediate/Standard First Aid are the current display names, while an older certificate may still show Emergency or Standard First Aid. Do not rewrite the name on your old record. Ask the provider to match it correctly.
A short course can sound attractive when time is tight. But the useful question is not “Which class is fastest?” It is “Which course can I actually take, and which certificate will my employer accept?” Ask both questions before booking. Do not wait until the last day if a renewal is approaching: available options and timing need to be confirmed.
