Canadian Red Cross or St. John Ambulance for first aid?
Both teach first aid in Canada. Choose the course level you need before choosing a school. Canadian Red Cross and St. John Ambulance (SJA) both list basic and intermediate first aid courses. They also offer CPR training. A brand name alone does not tell your employer which certificate to accept. See the Red Cross course list and SJA course list.

The Red Cross figures above are for CPR-C and leave breaks out. SJA lists an overall course duration. These are not matched measures of teaching time. Ask for your class schedule. Red Cross Basic; Red Cross Intermediate.
What do the classes include?
Both providers use practical skills checks and a written assessment. Red Cross Basic and Intermediate courses require successful skills demonstration, at least 75% on the written evaluation, and full attendance. SJA lists an in-class skills assessment and written exam. Both providers offer classroom and blended options for these courses. In blended learning, online theory comes before the in-person part.
Start with the Red Cross Basic course, Red Cross Intermediate course, SJA Basic course or SJA Intermediate course.
Will my workplace accept it?
The rule depends on the province and the exact certificate, not which name sounds bigger. In Ontario, look at the current WSIB provider directory and the required first aid level. In Quebec, a worker named as a workplace first aider needs the separate CNESST program through a recognized organization. SJA lists a CNESST course apart from its general classes. That does not make every SJA course a CNESST certificate.
Quick questions
Which is better?
Neither name wins on its own. Ask which skills and certificate your job or school needs, then compare available classes.
Can I take only an online awareness course for work?
Do not assume so. SJA lists awareness courses apart from its full first aid classes, and WSIB does not approve online-only workplace first aid.
How long does an SJA first aid certificate last?
SJA says three years; local recertification rules can differ. Check the SJA renewal page and the exact course terms.
